College of Education and Human Development - George Mason University

Individual Assessment

For testing in April and May 2024, please complete this form. This is our busy season, with increased demand due to FCPS AAP Appeals.

For those seeking testing for AAP Appeals, the test we offer is Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V). This is an individually administered test of intellectual ability that is 1:1 with an examiner. The fee is $400 and we do provide a waiver for those who qualify for Free/Reduced Lunch. Our examiners are mostly graduate students who are supervised by licensed psychologists.

What to expect:

  • Once you complete our form, our office will call you within a few days, but up to a week, to schedule an appointment. We are doing our best to work through the requests and hope to have an appointment for everyone. However, we cannot guarantee an appointment for everyone that has requested one due to a high demand.
  • If it is clear that we cannot accommodate anyone else on our list, we will send an email by May 6 to those that are affected.
  • For those who were tested by May 4, results should be available by May 9 or earlier. Our process has many steps and we cannot expedite results, but some examiners have the capability of being more efficient than others based on a variety of factors. Thank you for your patience.
  • FCPS AAP has shared the following: “FCPS AAP will accept and consider results from George Mason's Cognitive Assessment Program until May 17 if you otherwise submit the appeal on time. Please include a confirmation notification from CAP that you have made an appointment before May 10 (even if testing is held after May 10).”
  • Once the appointment is scheduled with our office, you will receive a detailed confirmation email from us with payment link ($400, unless your child qualifies for a waiver) and location and parking information. You will also be asked to complete forms in our portal prior to testing.
  • Your examiner will reach out to you via email within a few days of your testing appointment to coordinate a short parent intake interview. This will be held via Zoom or in person day of testing at the examiner’s discretion.
  • Testing takes about 2-3 hours, and varies depending on a variety of factors.
  • Following testing, results are scored and reviewed by our office. A report is generated, then reviewed and signed by a licensed psychologist. A virtual feedback session is held with the parent/caregiver, then the report is sent to the parent/caregiver via email with password protection.
  • In April and May, we are prioritizing students who are seeking individual testing for FCPS AAP deadline of May 10, or other published deadlines within this time frame. If you are seeking Kindergarten Readiness, WPPSI-IV, or WISC-V and you do not need results by May 10, please call us in mid-May to schedule an appointment and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.

If you have a specific question that cannot be answered on our website, you may email us: cap@gmu.edu. Thank you for your patience!
